This notice explains how we collect, use, share and protect personal information in the YALS 40 Under 40: Africa's Changemakers programme. Please read it before you apply or nominate someone.
The YALS 40 Under 40: Africa's Changemakers programme is operated by the Young African Leaders Summit organising committee together with the Young Global Leaders Network ("we", "us"). We are the data controller for the personal information described in this notice. You can contact us about anything in this notice at yalsummit@yglnetwork.com.
From applicants and nominees: identity and contact details (name, date of birth, nationality, country and city of residence, email, telephone); professional details (role, organisation, websites, public profiles); your application content (impact statement, evidence, answers, links); supporting files you upload (documents, images, your video or audio or written statement, and your photograph); referee details you provide; and your summit interest answers, which never affect selection.
From nominators: your identity and contact details, your relationship to the nominee, and the information you provide about them, including links to public coverage of their work.
From referees: the name, position, organisation and contact details supplied by the applicant, and any response a referee later gives us.
Optional equality information (such as gender) is collected separately, stored separately from your application, never shown to reviewers or judges, and used only in anonymised form to monitor the fairness and balance of the programme.
Applications are screened for eligibility and completeness, scored against the published criteria, and reviewed by trained members of the selection team. Automated screening technology assists the team with initial checks and with organising and scoring applications consistently against the published criteria. It does not make selection decisions. Longlisted applications are scored by independent judges, and every decision about the final list is made by people. If you believe an eligibility rule was applied to you incorrectly, you may request a process review as described in the programme FAQ.
We operate across the United Kingdom, Malta and Ghana, and applicants come from many countries. Where personal information is transferred between countries, we protect it with appropriate safeguards, including contractual protections with our service providers.
Application data is held in access-controlled systems. Uploaded files are stored in protected storage that is not publicly browsable. Access is limited to people who need it for the programme, secure links are unique to each person, and administrative access is password protected and logged.
You may ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to or ask us to restrict particular uses, and withdraw any consent you have given, including consent to publication. Applicants in the UK, the EU and many other countries have these rights in law; we extend the same treatment to every applicant regardless of country. To use any of them, email yalsummit@yglnetwork.com and we will respond within one month. If you are in the UK or EU and are unhappy with our response, you may complain to your data protection authority, which in the UK is the Information Commissioner's Office.
If we change this notice in a way that matters, we will publish the new version here with a new effective date, and tell applicants with live applications by email.
