Privacy Policy

Effective 14 July 2026

The Young African Leaders Summit (YALS) is organised by the Young Global Leaders Network (YGLN). This policy explains what personal information we collect through yalssummit.com and our summit programmes, what we do with it, and the choices you have. We have written it in plain language on purpose.

What we collect

When you register as a delegate, we collect the details you give us on the form: your name, email address, phone number, country, and where relevant your organisation and role. Applications for volunteer roles, the YoungTalk Stage, and the Call for Papers collect the information those forms ask for, such as your experience, a talk summary, or a research abstract. If you subscribe to updates, we hold your email address for that purpose.

Payments for registration are handled by established payment providers. Card details go to them directly; we never see or store your full card number.

Like most websites, we also collect some technical information automatically: pages visited, approximate location, device and browser type. We use this to understand how the site is used and to keep it working properly.

How we use your information

We use registration and application details to run the summit: processing your registration, assessing applications, arranging delegate communications, and organising the event itself in Accra. We use contact details to send you information about YALS and closely related YGLN programmes. Every email of that kind includes a way to opt out. We do not sell personal information to anyone.

Social media

YALS runs accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and X, and we publish content to those accounts using our own scheduling tools. When you interact with us on those platforms, the platform's own privacy policy applies alongside this one. We see the information those platforms normally show page owners, such as comments, messages sent to our accounts, and aggregate statistics.

Who we share it with

We share personal information only with the service providers we need to run the summit and this website: hosting, email delivery, payment processing, and event management. They act on our instructions. Where a partner organisation sponsors delegates or hosts part of the programme, we share only what is needed to deliver that arrangement, and we tell you at the point of collection where that applies.

Your rights and the law we follow

YGLN operates from the United Kingdom, and the summit takes place in Ghana, so we work to the UK GDPR and to Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843). You can ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to particular uses. To do any of these, contact us through the contact page on this website and we will respond within one month.

How long we keep it

We keep delegate and application records for the summit cycle they relate to and for a reasonable period afterwards for reporting, alumni engagement, and legal requirements, after which they are deleted or anonymised. Mailing list details are kept until you unsubscribe.

Security and children

We take sensible technical and organisational measures to protect the information we hold, including encrypted connections to this website and restricted access to registration data. Our services are aimed at people aged 18 and over, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new effective date. The current version is always the one that applies.
