A certificate you earn in a room

Most leadership certificates end with a quiz. This one ends with you on your feet in the African Youth General Assembly, holding a brief, defending a position your country has issued, in front of people who disagree with you.

The taught part runs online in the months before the summit. Six modules, discussion forums where your cohort argues with each other rather than with a marking scheme, and two live webinar sessions. The assessment finishes in Accra.

There is no fee. The programme is free to every delegate who has registered and paid for the summit, and the certificate is not capped.

The six modules

Module 1

Leadership in African Contexts

What leadership asks of you here, rather than in a textbook written somewhere else.

Module 2

The Architecture of African Diplomacy

The African Union, the regional bodies, and how decisions actually travel between them.

Module 3

Negotiation and Representation

Speaking for other people. Holding a mandate that is not your personal opinion.

Module 4

Policy Influence and Advocacy

Getting a position from a room into a document, and from a document into a decision.

Module 5

Public Communication and Cross-Cultural Practice

Being understood across languages, borders and audiences that do not share your assumptions.

Module 6

Ethics, Integrity and Public Trust

Conceding without collapsing, winning without gloating, and what you will not trade.

How it is assessed

Thirty five of the hundred marks come from the Assembly itself, judged against preparation and mandate, contribution to the negotiation, and conduct on the floor. The remainder comes from the taught programme and your written work.

1Claim your place

Open to every registered delegate. Claiming a place enrols you in the taught programme.

2Work through the modules

Six modules online, with discussion forums and two live sessions, completed at your own pace before the summit.

3Prepare your brief

You hold a named brief in the Assembly and your country's position paper. Preparation is marked.

4The chamber

Assessors observe the committees and the House. No assessor observes a chamber containing a delegate from their own country.

5Certification

Successful candidates are certified. Every other delegate in the Assembly receives a certificate of participation.

Taking the certificate is optional. Every delegate sits in the Assembly whether or not they are being assessed, and your place at the summit is unaffected either way.

Register, then claim your place

The certificate is free, but it is only open to delegates who have registered and paid.
